What it takes to do [X] in Bihar.

Every undertaking contains a sequence of decisions. The difficult ones rarely make it into an ecosystem report.

The question beneath the headline

Closer to the actual work.

What It Takes is a series in development about the operating realities of building in Bihar: finding a first customer, securing a permission, organising skilled labour, choosing a vendor, financing a delay, or deciding what to do next.

The unit of inquiry is a practical question inside a real undertaking. By examining its sequence, constraints and trade-offs, the series intends to make situated knowledge useful to someone facing a similar decision.

  • What has to happen before the next step is possible?
  • Who holds the knowledge, permission or responsibility?
  • Where does the plan meet a condition it did not account for?

Intended approach

Understand it from inside.

The planned approach is to follow a question through practitioners’ accounts, relevant documents and the conditions on the ground. Separate what transfers from one situation to another from what depends on a particular place, person or institution.

The series is being developed. No instalments have been published yet.
